General FrontPage® Frequently Asked
Questions
This section consists answers to general questions I frequently receive.
- How do I get rid
of the NTLM Authentication Error?
- Which Personal Web Server should be
installed?
The Microsoft Personal Web Server (MS PWS)
should be used instead of the FrontPage Personal Web Server (FP PWS). This is because the
FP PWS sometimes has erratic behavior, and doesn't support CGI, ISAPI, IDC or ASP.
Two versions of the MS PWS are currently
available: MS PWS 2 (found on your FrontPage CD in the \PWS\ENU directory) and MS PWS 4.
Version 4 is highly recommended (found on the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack CD and on the
Windows 98 CD, and can be downloaded
from Microsoft.
Before installing the MS PWS 4, you can
also take a look at: When to Use FP PWS
Versus MPWS which includes a hyperlink to Why Are There Two
Versions of the Personal Web Server?
- How do I restrict access to my site
or different areas of my site?
You could place your files in a password protected sub web or you could use an ASP
solution.
There's a great tutorial
on authentication on the activeserpages.com site as well as a sample ASP scripts at: http://www.takempis.com/pword.asp and http://www.kamath.com/tutorial/auth.asp
Another solution might be to use a Third Party utility, such as RiadaLock.
- How do I secure my site using SSL?
Verisign has a great whitepaper on this at:
http://www.verisign.com/whitepaper/onsite/server/
- How can I let users browse a
directory?
You can either set "allow directory browsing" in you server or you can try out
this pretty cool (and FREE) ASP Script at: http://www.aspalliance.com/chris/browseDirs/index.asp
- How do I Check Credit Cards with
VBScript?
- What are Cascading Style Sheets?
- How
do you "License" an ActiveX Control?
- Where can I find out more
about Microsoft Typography and Style Sheets?
- What's the Difference between a
.gif and a .jpg?
Photographs:
When saving photos, the JPG (also JPEG) file format is the best choice. JPG files are
relatively small and the photo quality is very good. The down side: Transparency is not an
option with the JPG format.
Graphics:
Text logos and line art, are examples of graphics that look great when saved in the GIF
file format. GIF files yield great lines and sharp edges, while still keeping file size
down. The added advantage of GIF files is that images can be saved with a "reduced
color palette" (fewer colors), thus further reducing file size--very important when
saving your creations for publishing on the Web. The down side: GIF files are limited to
256 solid colors.
- What Does
that Term Mean?
